Kingmaker: A Promising National Hunt Prospect
We are absolutely delighted to welcome Kingmaker to Pompey Ventures — and even more excited to confirm he is now in training with British & Irish Champion Trainer, Willie Mullins at Closutton
Kingmaker is an exciting 4-year-old bay colt by the renowned sire Camelot out of Ana Zghorta (by Anabaa).
With a Timeform rating of 83 from his flat career with Andrew Balding, this genuine and consistent maiden has shown eye-catching finishing efforts, particularly in his last start at Kempton, displaying a game attitude and the stamina suited to jumping.
When we first pulled him out from his box at Tattersalls his presence and size were immediately striking - especially impressive for a 3 year old, with so much scope to improve for National Hunt style racing. He was a standout physical for a jumps horse and that clearly didn't go unnoticed, with Jonjo O’Neil as the underbidder!
He was purchased for 55,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, and presents a classic dual-purpose profile, ready to transition into National Hunt racing after being gelded.
Pedigree Built for Jumping
Kingmaker is by Camelot, the unbeaten champion 2-year-old and triple Classic winner (2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, and Irish Derby), who has proven his versatility as a sire. His progeny excel over middle distances on the flat, but they also perform well in National Hunt racing, inheriting the stamina and toughness from his sire Montjeu's line—which produced legendary jumpers like Hurricane Fly and Tiger Roll. Camelot's offspring have amassed over 70 winners and 137 wins over hurdles, plus 11 wins over fences, with total earnings exceeding £1.9 million in hurdles alone.
Kingmaker has the classic dual-purpose profile:
-
Proven flat ability
-
A strong staying pedigree
-
The physical scope to improve markedly for obstacles
We strongly suspect the main reason we were able to secure him at his price is simply because he is still a maiden. He has shown a genuine attitude towards his racing. His results simply reflect that races just haven’t been run to suit him. With a win on his page, he likely would have been out of our reach.
"Kingmaker was my NAP of the sale for a flat horse to go jumping. He has SO much size and scope, accompanied by a clean vetting. I’m amazed we were able to get him for only 55,000gns, I had more in the budget to get him! I think being a maiden put a few people off, but in my opinion there is nothing wrong with this horses attitude towards his racing.
I cannot wait to host our first owners morning on the gallops at Closutton!"

Settled at Closutton
Since arriving at Willie Mullins' Closutton yard on December 13, 2025, following a short break and after being gelded, Kingmaker has settled in superbly. He is adapting well to his new environment under the champion trainer's expert eye.
Willie & Patrick have described him as looking ‘magnificent’ with his impressive size and scope, and that is not a word used lightly at Closutton!
Our owners have already enjoyed their first morning on the gallops, watching Kingmaker in action as well as the opportunity to meet his superstar stable mates such as Galopin Des Champs, Fact To File & Lossiemouth, among others.
A surreal experience for all of us!
What’s the Plan?
We have high hopes for Kingmaker's debut season over jumps. Willie & Patrick have mentioned their intention to try and target races at the prestigious Galway Festival in the summer and the Cheltenham October Meeting in the winter, with the idea of coming over to the UK for some of the bigger flat meeting, as well as an entry in the Cesarewitch all being discussed as possibilities. There are numerous middle distance/staying handicaps across meetings such as Glorious Goodwood, Royal Ascot and the York Ebor meeting that could be potentially be considered too, once we have him back on the track and Willie & Patrick have had the opportunity to assess his racing first hand.
With his pedigree, physical and a top-class training setup, Kingmaker represents a fantastic opportunity for syndicate involvement in National Hunt racing and gives us genuine excitement for his first season.
We are thrilled to be able to add the worlds best jumps trainer to our infantry, providing our owners with National Hunt ownership at the very highest level.
This will be seriously good fun.

Update 1.11.25
And the success just keeps coming for Willie! In an extraordinary new milestone, Willie Mullins has captured his first Breeders’ Cup victory with Ethical Diamond storming home to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar - a landmark triumph on the flat for a trainer best known for his dominance over jumps! This latest success cements Willies’ reputation as one of the most versatile and accomplished trainers in global racing.
What an additional to the PV training team💙🖤
