Raised in Oxfordshire, James's passion for horse racing was nurtured by his parents, who were point-to-point trainers. This early exposure led him to a successful amateur jockey career, during which he secured 128 point-to-point victories and 14 wins under official racing rules.

In 2014, James Owen Racing was established at Green Ridge Stables on Newmarket's Hamilton Road. Initially focusing on pre-training and breaking services,  in January 2023 James obtained a full training license, enabling him to train horses under both National Hunt and Flat racing codes. His impact was immediate; within 18 months, he amassed over 175 winners, showcasing a remarkable strike rate of 22%.

As of early 2025, Owen's training operation continues to thrive. He currently oversees a string of over 90 horses, reflecting significant growth from his initial foray into licensed training. His stable boasts promising talents such as EAST INDIA DOCK, a leading contender for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, and WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE, a notable prospect for the Epsom Derby. James's vision includes international ambitions, with plans to target prestigious races like the Ascot Gold Cup and the Melbourne Cup.
